One of the biggest mistakes I see growing companies make is assuming every new challenge requires another hire.
It usually doesn’t.
When a team feels overwhelmed, the first reaction is to add headcount. In my experience, the real issue is often that the business is doing work that should have been eliminated, simplified, or automated long ago.
Before I hire anyone, I ask one simple question.
Do we even need this work?
My Rule Before Adding Headcount
Over the years, I’ve relied on the same decision process before expanding a team.
I ask:
- Can we eliminate this task because it no longer creates value?
- Can we optimize the process so it takes less time and effort?
- Can we automate it with technology or AI?
- If it still requires a person, can a fractional or outsourced expert handle it before we hire full time?
Only after those questions do I consider adding another employee.
Every unnecessary hire creates complexity.
Every optimized process creates leverage.
Invest in Your Best Leaders
I also see companies spending too much time trying to improve average performers while overlooking their highest-potential people.
The greatest return comes from developing your emerging leaders.
- Give high performers the coaching and leadership skills they need before growth outpaces their capabilities.
- Remove low-value work so they can focus on decisions that move the business forward.
Strong leaders multiply results.
More employees rarely do.
The Bottom Line
Growth does not always require more people.
More often, it requires better decisions.
The companies that scale fastest eliminate unnecessary work, optimize what remains, and invest in the leaders who create the greatest impact.
