Vivid Vision

You Need to Hire Based on Your Vivid Vision®

Even down to the employee recruiting stage, your company’s Vivid Vision® helps ensure alignment.

That’s why you need to hire based on your Vivid Vision®, but how do you do that?

Also, if you don’t know what a Vivid Vision® is, check out this blog first!

Require a Pre-Interview Vivid Vision® Reading

Have all your potential employees read your Vivid Vision® before their first interview. This way they’ll know if the job/work culture will feel right to them. Ideally, doing this weeds out unqualified candidates.

One bad apple can spoil the whole bunch. You don’t want an employee that doesn’t want to make your Vivid Vision® a reality. Not only will that employee be a drain, but they’ll bring others down, too.

Ensure Everyone Gets a Copy of Your Vivid Vision®

To make sure that everyone does read your Vivid Vision® before their first interview, set up an email auto-reply so that all candidates who send their resumes to your company via email instantly get a response.

This response should say something like, “Thank you for applying to work for us. Please read the attached Vivid Vision® that describes what our company looks and feels like three years out. If this sounds like the kind of company you’d like to help build, send us an email with the words, ‘please interview me’ in the subject line.”

It’s a great system that saves everyone a lot of time by not interviewing candidates that don’t like what the future has in store for them. It also shines a spotlight on candidates who are paying attention and take the time to send a reply back following your directions. Plus, in the interview, you’ll know if they’ve read your Vivid Vision®. The ones who have will stand out!

Come Back to the Vivid Vision® Frequently

It’s important that, even after hiring, you have all of your employees and suppliers re-read your Vivid Vision® every quarter. When every employee reads it, the process of alignment starts taking place.

Every quarter, have each person read the Vivid Vision® quietly and circle keywords or sentences that resonate with them. Then go around the room and have each person read out the areas they like. This provides alignment for the whole team before the brainstorming process takes place. It can also assist in planning and prioritizing future projects.

“It is very important that you share your Vivid Vision with your employees. When your employees know exactly what is envisioned for the company in the next three years, especially all the minor details, they know that their work will have an impact.” – COO Alliance

Your Vivid Vision® should be in use in all aspects of the job, from hiring to being an employee. Everyone involved with your company needs to be familiar with it. If a potential candidate doesn’t bother to get to know it, then their interview isn’t worth your time!

How to Prepare for Fast Growth with a Vivid Vision®

Young, ambitious entrepreneurs want a lot of different things, from more press to a better corporate culture, to amazing employees. Underneath it all, though, they all want one thing most of all: to make more money.

Who doesn’t? It’s a universal desire and one that can be achieved! But, to get there, they have to prepare for fast growth. The most important thing, though, is that they’ll never get there without a detailed vision of their future.

That’s where a Vivid Vision® comes in.

First, Know What a Vivid Vision® Is

A Vivid Vision® is a detailed, three to four-page document that lays out a clear, logical vision of what your company will look like in three years.

“A Vivid Vision® is essentially the plan for the future of your company. It’s one that has to be big and ambitious and filled with piles and piles of hope for your company.” – Cameron Herold

When it’s completed, it’s meant to be woven into your company’s culture, guiding your employees’ decision-making and giving all involved clear goals to strive for.

Second, Begin Writing It

Usually, creating a Vivid Vision® is a very involved process that can take as long as six months to get right. Often, young entrepreneurs benefit from help from a mentor or someone else from the business to help them through. Even without one, though, you can still write a great Vivid Vision® on your own. Regardless of how much experience you have writing Vivid Visions®, having one, no matter how rough it is, prepares you far more for fast growth than not having one at all!

Here are some tips to get you started:

  • It’s important not to get caught up in the ‘how’ of things. Instead, dream big and worry about the ‘how’ later
  • You’ll need to be free of the day-to-day worries of running your business. You need the freedom to visualize your future
  • Get out of your office and go somewhere inspiring where you can let your mind wander, such as a hammock in your backyard, or the beach, or the woods, etc
  • Turn off your computer. No matter how much willpower you have, the temptation of email or web surfing will be a distraction
  • Get out of your comfort zone, think outside the box—choose whatever cliché works for you. Just be creative, even outlandish. You’ll be amazed at what you can come up with. It’s a sure-fire way to create a fun, dynamic vision you and your employees will love to strive for.

Third, Make it Stand Out

A good Vivid Vision® not only prepares you for fast growth, but it also causes that growth as well! The more your Vivid Vision® stands out, the more growth it will bring you.

Often, the Vivid Visions® that stand out most share a few common traits. They forgo all the mind-numbing doublespeak and restrictive, creativity-killing metrics and get right to the heart of the exercise.

What’s the heart, you may ask. That’s simple: What is really possible for my company?

The possibilities for growth are endless when you know the value of a Vivid Vision®, and the preparation it gives you when that fast growth comes is invaluable. Do you want a successful fast-growing company? Then write a Vivid Vision®!

Why You Need to Get Out of Your Comfort Zone to Create a Great Vivid Vision®

If you’re running a company, you’re the one responsible for creating your company’s Vivid Vision®. The problem with that is, you’ve probably built yourself a nice office, somewhere that’s nice, clean, and comfortable. It’s your perfect workspace… most of the time, but not when you’re writing your Vivid Vision®.

But why?

Comfort Lacks Creativity

To write a Vivid Vision® that is filled with outside-of-the-box ideas, you need to physically be somewhere that makes you think outside of the box.

Your office space is too comfortable. It’s filled with everything you need to get your day-to-day work done, whether that’s your laptop, your favorite books, or pictures of your family when you need a bit of motivation. The problem is, it takes discomfort to think outside of the box enough to create an amazing Vivid Vision®.

You Need to Go Some Place That Inspires You

“The first thing you can do to unlock your creative side is to get into a creative space. By sitting in the same, old office you do all your work in, you’re going to have a much harder time breaking from the serious, logical mindset that’s required to do all your other work.” – Cameron Herold

To write a great Vivid Vision®, get out of the office and go somewhere inspirational. You could write by the ocean, in the forest, or even in a hammock in your backyard! Anywhere that gets you out of the box that is your office.

Your Comfort Zone Holds Unforseen Distractions

New places ooze inspiration and they lack a lot of the distractions that can be detrimental to your Vivid Vision® process. Your office is brimming with distractions — emails, phone calls, people popping their heads in the door. These kinds of interruptions can shatter your flow and drag the Vivid Vision® process out indefinitely.

To visualize your future properly, you need to really focus.

Trying to conduct the visualization exercises that are essential to your Vivid Vision® process in places like your office or a boardroom doesn’t work. It surrounds you with the minutiae of the office environment — the hum of the copier, the murmur of phone conversations, even the white noise of the air conditioner. These sounds can subconsciously lock your brain into rigid, business-first thought patterns that will stifle the creativity it takes to imagine a bright, exciting future in your Vivid Vision®.

You Need to Remove Yourself from the Rational

Going somewhere new and away from the comfort of your day-to-day allows you to remove yourself from rational thought somewhat.

A lot of leaders are decidedly left-brained. They’ve been successful their whole lives using rational, pragmatic thinking. That’s just the kind of thinking that can ruin the Vivid Vision® visualization process.

The idea is to visualize the “where” that you want to take your company without concerning yourself with the “how.” It’s easy to get caught up in the “how” when you’re surrounded by sales charts and spreadsheets. Freeing yourself from the office, in turn, frees your mind from the boundaries of business metrics. You’ll be able to fantasize without letting reality rain on your parade.

Most people complain that they spend too much time in the office anyway. This is the perfect excuse to get out of it! Enjoy the sunshine, breath in the fresh air, and visualize your perfect Vivid Vision®.

Vivid Vision®: Where, Not How

One of the best parts of creating a Vivid Vision® is the chance it gives you to tear off the shackles of reality and logic and, instead, fantasize about your future. The problem is, more often than not, successful entrepreneurs have a hard time tapping into their creative side. The pragmatic, logical thought patterns that made them successful don’t allow a lot of room for imagination.

It’s a thought pattern they need to break free from. Here is how to do that, how to focus on the where rather than the how of your Vivid Vision®.

But First, for Those that are New, What’s a Vivid Vision®?

A Vivid Vision® is essentially the plan for the future of your company. It’s one that has to be big and ambitious and filled with piles and piles of hope for your company.

“A Vivid Vision® is a document, roughly three pages in length, describing what a company’s highest-ranking executive envisions for that company in vivid detail. It describes what the future holds for the company but not how it’ll get there.” – Cameron Herold Blog

So, now that you know what a Vivid Vision® is, how do you tap into your creative side to create one?

The Space You’re In Matters

The first thing you can do to unlock your creative side is to get into a creative space. By sitting in the same, old office you do all your work in, you’re going to have a much harder time breaking from the serious, logical mindset that’s required to do all your other work.

Getting creative is getting out of your shell. This first step is taking that literally. Get out of your office!

Don’t Worry About Being Practical

Your Vivid Vision® can be outlandish and it’s important that you acknowledge that and accept it. Allow yourself to think about crazy stuff. If you have an idea that’s too outlandish or impractical to bring up in a meeting, then it should definitely be considered for your Vivid Vision®.

The thing about brainstorming big, impractical ideas for your Vivid Vision® is that you don’t need to use them all in the end. You just have to allow yourself to think outside the box for a while and jot down all sorts of absurd ideas. Then, eventually, you can think more practically and pick and choose which ones to use, but before that time comes you have to leave the practicality behind and just brainstorm!

Do Some Mind Mapping

For that brainstorm of crazy ideas mentioned above, you can use a technique called ‘mind-mapping.’ For this technique, you write down whatever thoughts pop into your head no matter how crazy they are. Each idea inspires another. Sometimes they’re connected and other times they’re completely random.

After a while, you’ll be left with a sheet of paper covered with seemingly unconnected notes. Then, when you dig a little deeper, patterns begin to emerge. They are ideas or directions you might not have been actively thinking of, but your creative subconscious certainly was.

It’s hard to let go of the how, but just like these directions in your mind map, the how of your Vivid Vision® happens organically. You just have to let it. Besides, these lofty goals and crazy visions aren’t necessarily supposed to be achieved. Rather, they are meant to act as guides leading you down a positive path. Sure, the path might not end with your logo on Oprah, but the steps you take in trying to get there will undoubtedly lead you to a better place.

So get out of your own way and imagine a future without limits. Who knows, you just might get there.

How Far Should Leaders Think Ahead?

It’s no question that thinking ahead is important for everyone, but especially for leaders and businesses. The question is, how far should you think ahead? Is there such a thing as thinking too far ahead?

We’ve all been in job interviews and fielded the inevitable question, “Where do you see yourself in five years?” It’s a tough one to answer without appearing too ambitious or too complacent.

But that’s not all. This question is flawed for a whole other reason. In a world as fast-paced as ours, how on earth can you accurately describe where you’ll be in five years?

The World is Changing Faster Than Ever Before

If someone had told you five years ago that you’d be unlocking your phone with face recognition, choosing between a billion streaming platforms to watch a movie on, and spending hours scrolling through Instagram, would you have believed them?

At the rate of change we’re seeing now, you could very well be married to a robot and living on Mars in five years.

That’s why there is such a thing as thinking too far ahead. Instead of looking five years into the future, try three. That’s the perfect length of time for any leader to think ahead, especially when creating their Vivid Vision®.

The Three Year Vivid Vision®

When creating a Vivid Vision® for your company, three years is far enough into the future to allow for some optimistic dreaming, but short-term enough to avoid having technological advancements make your plans seem dated and useless.

Trying to visualize where your company will be further out can get overwhelming. There are too many factors to consider, too much to cover, and too many contingencies to build in. Do all the work to plan what your company will look like in 10 years, then watch as it all crumbles to the ground when some MIT grad comes along and invents some revolutionary technology that completely changes the game. Think ahead, but not too far ahead.

Three Years is Plenty of Time to Make it Come True

Three years means you won’t have to continually undergo the process of reworking your Vivid Vision®. It’s a good idea to begin working on your Vivid Vision® about six months before the existing one is complete. That’ll give you plenty of time to make the old one come true before the new one comes into play.

Hopefully, you’ve hired ambitious people, too. A shorter-term Vivid Vision® allows them to advance and move up in rank without disrupting your plan. If you try to forecast further out and share a vision of the company that doesn’t accommodate growth for certain employees. You might find yourself losing talent.

Young, ambitious, entrepreneurial-type employees that got where they are by always looking into the future are great kinds of people to work with, but it can be difficult to get them to scale back and focus on only the next three years. Explain it to them like this: in order to create your Vivid Vision®, you have to keep one foot planted in the present and lean out to test the soil in the future with your other foot. If you lean out too far, you’ll fall down.

So don’t think ahead of yourself. Craft your Vivid Vision® three years out and get to work making it come true. Those 36 months will be over before you know it!

How far do you think ahead? Does it work for you? Let us know in the comments below!

Hall of Fame

Hall of Fame

When I mentor young entrepreneurs, I endeavor to give them a war chest of skills that will help them long into the future. One tool that I ensure each of them has is a Vivid Vision. I’ve talked about these invaluable documents a lot in other blog posts. They are one of my hallmarks. Your own hall of fame so to speak.

And why am I such an advocate? Because time after time, I’ve seen them work.

Over the years, I’ve worked at creating a Vivid Vision with dozens of organizations, from small boutique firms to $100 million enterprises. In this post, I thought I’d share a little detail about what some of these companies did to their Vivid Visions that really made them pop.

Red Balloon Days, an online retailer that sells exceptional experiences to Australia and New Zealand, had a graphic designer give their Vivid Vision the royal treatment. Bright colors, cool fonts, funky images—the document grabbed the reader’s eyeballs and refused to let go.

So often, companies fear injecting life into their documents or presentations lest they appear ‘unprofessional’ or ’amateur’. Sure, there are times for somber, professional presentations, but I strongly support adding flair when the opportunity presents itself. I stop short of cheesy cartoons or using Comic Sans font, but believe that bright, colorful annual reports, proposals and Vivid Visions are far more effective (and more fun to read).

Nurse Next Door went multimedia with their Vivid Vision. This provider of in-home health services for the elderly of the US and Canada combined the written aspect of their document with a voiceover recorded by its cofounder.

I loved how the visuals really brought their vision to life. It’s one thing to talk about TIME Magazine profiling your company in your Vivid Vision, but it’s another altogether to have a mocked up magazine cover graphically displaying it.

The company was pretty happy with it. So much so, they put it up on YouTube where nearly 2,000 people have viewed it.

What do you do when you are a global organization with offices in 25 countries and you want to introduce the concept of a Painted Picture to all of your employees? If you’re Sebastien Tondeur, the CEO of MCI (a global event management firm), you film a slick, professional introduction that explains exactly what a Vivid Vision is, and how it relates to the company’s future.

His charisma is obvious, and his introduction gets his employees excited about their role in making the Vivid Vision come to life.

I could go on and on, but what’s important to remember is that any Vivid Vision is exceptional. You don’t need flashy graphics or CGI visuals , you just need to take the time and effort it takes to visualize your company’s future. Who knows, you might end up in my Hall of Fame.

Quick Guide: How to Sell Your Company for the Highest Price – Part 1

Businessman hand presenting business idea sketch on palm

If you want to increase the value of your privately held company, it’s not just about profits. While profitability is critical, there are other factors that can elevate your company’s valuation when it comes time to sell. Three years ago, I introduced a CEO to an awesome M&A firm. They helped package his company for sale and found a strategic buyer who paid $50 million more than he ever imagined selling for. Nail these tips now and your company will be positioned to sell for a higher price.

Well-Organized Accounting: Don’t put off getting your accounting in order. Be ready at all times so that you can respond quickly when information is requested. Buyers will see your company as well organized and will be more likely to pay a higher price when they don’t anticipate unforeseen surprises.

Awesome Employees : Tout your company’s talent as an asset! Employees with strong skills add value, particularly when it comes to the sales team, or other key roles that drive revenue, efficiency or innovation within the company. Loyalty is also a distinguishing characteristic to promote – buyers want to know that key employees will stay for the long term.

Office Culture that Feels Amazing: Enlist the help of a designer to “stage” your office so that the physical space looks great and feels like an incredible work place. Freshly painted walls, organized shelves and attractive wall art all add to your company’s image.

Strong Branding & Name Recognition: The stronger your company’s brand recognition, the better. Rollout a stellar PR strategy 12-18 months prior to the start of the sale process to help show that your company is in a growth mode. Refresh website content and other communication materials so that they’re relevant and in alignment with the message you are promoting to buyers.

Recurring & Diversified Revenue: All revenue is not equal. Buyers will – and do – pay a premium for booked reoccurring revenue. This means ongoing contracts with customers and a track record of predictable growth. Diversified revenue is also a must. Broaden your revenue base so that no more than 10-15% is based on one single customer.

The Company Runs Without YOU: Businesses that rely less on the owner go for a higher selling price. Take steps now to increase your company’s independence and ability to remain productive during an ownership transition.

Share an Inspiring Vivid Vision: When you have a clear vision, ideally a Vivid Vision document, it will excite and inspire the buyer about the company’s future and abundant potential. This also helps with demonstrating the alignment between you and your employees.

Trustworthy & Fantastic M&A Firm – M&A Firms are a dime a dozen. However, finding one that can create a multiple-bid buyer market for you is what drives up your company’s selling price. Over the past eight years, I’ve finally found a few that I introduce companies to all the time.

Email me if you’d like an introduction to help you sell your company – Cameron@CameronHerold.com.

A (Vivid) Vision of Your Company

5b

I’ve worked with a lot of young, ambitious entrepreneurs in my time as a business coach and mentor. They are a diverse group, from tech savvy Silicon Valley insiders to CEOs of major blue chip companies. They’ve wanted a lot of different things, from more press to a better corporate culture. But underneath it all, they’ve all really wanted the same thing: to make more money.

It’s a universal desire, and one that I can help them achieve. But to get there, they have to prepare for fast growth. And they’ll never get there without a detailed vision of their future.

This is why I am such a proponent of creating a Vivid Vision.  A Vivid Vision, is a detailed, three to four page document that lays out a clear, logical vision of what your company will look like in three years.

When completed, it’s meant to be woven into your company’s culture, guiding your employees decision making and giving all involved clear goals to strive for.

Usually, creating Vivid Visions is a very involved process that can take as long as six months to get right. There’s a lot of back and forth between my clients and me. Unfortunately, I don’t have the time to spend with each of you as you put together your own, but I can offer these tips that will help you get started down the right path in creating the very best Vivid Vision possible.  I can also introduce you to the writers and designers all my clients are using to nail theirs.  email me at Cameron@CameronHerold.com for intros.

It’s important not to get caught up in the ‘how’ of things. Instead, dream big and worry about the ‘how’ later

You’ll need to be free of the day-to-day worries of running your business. You need freedom to visualize your future

Get out of your office and go somewhere inspiring where you can let your mind wander (I wrote the Vivid Vision for my business from the hammock in my backyard).

Turn off your computer. No matter how much willpower you have, the temptation of email or web surfing will be a distraction

Get out of your comfort zone, think out side the box—choose whatever cliché works for you. Just be creative, even outlandish. You’ll be amazed at what you can come up with. It’s a sure fire way to create a fun, dynamic vision you and your employees will love to strive for.

I’ve helped with hundreds of Vivid Visions in my career, and the ones that really stand out in my mind share a few common traits. They forgo all the mind-numbing corporate double speak and restrictive, creativity-killing metrics and get right to the heart of the exercise:

“What is really possible for my company?”

Check out these DVDs where I talk in more detail about certain aspects of the Vivid Vision process. You can also find a copy of my own Vivid Vision online at CameronHerold.com, To some, it is just a four page document. But to you, it very well may be the most important four pages you ever write.  email me at Cameron@CameronHerold.com for coaching around doing your own.

A Stark, Clear, Vivid Vision…

6bHave you ever observed an athlete right before a competition? The next time you watch the Olympics take a look at the high jumpers.  You’ll see many of them standing very still just before they start running to the bar.  Then they’ll close their eyes and you’ll see their head bobbing up and down as they imagine running up to the bar—but they haven’t even moved.  Sometimes they even throw their head backwards a bit as they jump over the bar in their mind.  Then they open their eyes, stare at the bar intently, and begin to recreate in real time what they just visualized.  Downhill skiers do this too–they’ll use their gloved hand to pretend to ski the entire course (some imagine it quite realistically in their minds, and you’ll see them respond physically to imagined obstacles on the hill). Whatever the sport, these athletes are using visualization to achieve their desired results, and by imagining the obstacles they might face, they prepare themselves mentally and physically for the challenge.  In fact, they have such a vivid vision of themselves performing, that it becomes completely instinctual.

The visualization techniques used by athletes should also be applied to business. I’ve had enormous success with the process after learning about it from an Olympic coach and sports psychologist. This coach worked with high performance athletes to help them visualize their task prior to the event taking place.  He showed us a variety of examples of where athletes using a process of visualization would so strongly ingrain the success and actual performance of the event into their mind, that when they competed, they simply recreated the vision they’d burned into their memory bank.  They could, in fact, ‘see themselves’ competing, and as a result, their vision of success became a reality. This has been core to my mentoring and coaching CEOs.  All the CEOs I mentor have written Vivid Visions of their companies.  email me – Cameron@BackPocketCOO.com for samples of some of the best.

Meetings Suck: Turning One Of The Most Loathed Elements Of Business Into One Of The Most Valuable

We all know that meetings suck, right?

You hear it all the time. It’s the one thing that almost everyone in business can agree on.

Except it’s not actually true…

Meetings don’t suck.

We just suck at running meetings.

When done right, meetings not only work, they make people and companies better.

In Meetings Suck, world renowned business expert and growth guru Cameron Herold teaches you how to use focused, time effective meetings to help you and your company soar.

This book shows you immediately actionable, step-by-step systems that ensure that you and everyone in your organization improves your meetings, right away.

In the process, you’ll turn meetings that suck into meetings that work.

In life, we always hear about people who’ve made huge decisions from their gut – without data.Today, I want you to make a decision, not only from your gut, but also from some data.  A decision that is only $12 per employee but will be priceless for your business.

Right now, your gut is telling you something is wrong with your company’s meetings.  You KNOW everyone complains about meetings.

People HATE going to them, they HATE running them, and they really have NO idea which meetings are truly necessary but they hold meetings simply because they think that is what they SHOULD do.

Even some of the smartest CEOs in the world complain about meetings – Elon Musk publicly told employees at Tesla & SpaceX to walk out of meetings if they weren’t being run properly.

I sent Elon a message saying that wasn’t going to fix anything – the key is to fix the root of the problem – NOT continue to ignore why meetings suck.

A Meeting is – Any phone call, video call or occasion where 2 or more people meet to discuss or work-through office topics.

Most employees on average spend 1-2 hours per day in meetings.

And likely, none of those employees – front-line staff or leaders – have had any training on how to attend meetings or participate in them, LET ALONE How to RUN THEM.

Consider this…

If the Average employee spends just 1 Hour per day in meetings – that’s 1/8th of their time.

If the Average employee earns $50,000 per year.

And they’re spending 1/8th of their time in meetings, that means you’re paying $6,250 dollars per year for just ONE employee to attend meetings.

The reality is, employees spend 1/8th of their time – and 1/8th of your company’s payroll – doing something they have literally NO idea how to do.

The Reality is…

95% of employees are booking & leading meetings – and they have NEVER been trained on how to run them.

95% of employees have had NO training on how to show up and participate in the meetings they attend daily.

And 95% of employees and companies have no idea what meetings are even necessary to hold.

Meetings CAN be hugely effective – IF you know how to run them

Meetings don’t SUCK, we just SUCK at running meetings.

Investing $15 per employee – to help ensure the $50,000 a year you spend on them is an obvious and easy choice.

This could be the most impactful $15 you’ll ever spend and will save the company’s money, time and resources instantly.

Buying a copy of Meetings Suck for 100% of your employees and having them read it this month will have a huge impact on your company’s success.
